About the German Colony

The German Colony (HaMoshava HaGermanit) is one of Jerusalem’s most sought-after neighborhoods, built in the 19th century by the German Templers. Its main street, Emek Refaim, is lined with cafés, restaurants and boutiques, and the Train Track Park (HaMesila) runs along its edge, connecting it to Baka, Katamon and the old First Station.

Characteristics

Expect a mix of restored Templer houses, Arab-style villas and low-rise stone apartment buildings on quiet, tree-lined side streets. There is a large English-speaking community, with several Anglo synagogues within walking distance, and the Old City is about a 20-minute walk away.

New construction in the German Colony

Land is scarce and much of the neighborhood is under preservation, so new construction comes mainly from small boutique projects and urban renewal (TAMA 38) of older buildings. Projects are typically 10 to 30 apartments and often sell before construction begins, which is why it pays to hear about them early. Prices are among the highest in Jerusalem, reflecting the location and the limited supply.

Getting around

Emek Refaim is a short ride from the city center and the light rail, and the neighborhood is easy to reach from Highway 1 for trips to Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport.
